energetic. happy. genuine.
Melissa has been a photographer for seven years. She has a BFA in photography from the Art Institute of Minnesota and got her professional start assisting award-winning wedding photographer Eliesa Johnson, owner of Photogen Inc. And that’s a funny story, actually. On one of her first weddings assisting Eliesa, she tripped over a flower plot during the bride and groom’s first look. It caused a huge commotion and she’s pretty sure she ruined the first look, but later the bride told her it helped relieve all the nerves and it ultimately made for a great wedding day story.
Melissa first became interested in photography when she was in high school. She loved the freedom it gave her to pick up a camera. She was never one to sit still in class and being able to move where the action was attracted her to photography. She enjoyed documenting friends, family, and everyday life. Eventually, it became a part of her. You might say it just “clicked!”
Melissa believes weddings are all about fun, so the ideal couple is willing to let their guard down in front of the camera, allowing her to capture their true personalities. Her niche is in photographing weddings for gay and lesbian couples throughout the Twin Cities. When she’s not behind the camera, you might find her trying new foods with friends, spending time with her cat, Bigz and dog, Tulsi, or up north with a paddle.
